The Ministry of Information published an advert on today’s newspaper looking for a web designer and a web developer, both of whom must hold a technical college diploma or an equivalent certificate in IT or computer engineering and must have knowledge of web design applications and web development languages. The job is only for Omani nationals who are not currently working at any other government units or agencies. Applications are to be submitted anytime between the 22nd of March to the 2nd of April to the Employee Affairs Department at the Ministry of Information HQ in Madinat Al Alam.

The Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in Muscat, Oman is looking for a graphic designer to join the PR and Publicity Department of SQU who shall be responsible for producing university logos and publications, designing and updating university websites, and design university advertisements. The job advert does not mentions any degree requirements, but says that the applicant must be experienced with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premier, Quark Xpress and Flash.

Applications are to be sent by mail within two weeks to the Director of HR at PO Box 50, Postal Code 123, Al Khod, Oman. Applicant’s CV, educational qualifications, and samples of previous work are to be submitted along with the application.

The Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) held the Design Forum 08 yesterday, an exhibition for students to network with graphic design companies in Oman. The event was inaugurated by the Undersecretary of Education and was carried throughout the whole day. TBWA\Zeenah, Landor, the Scientific College of Design, Alzahra College, and other design related companies and institutions and Oman3D participated in the exhibited.

The SQU Design Forum 08 opening included a couple of speeches on design and the awarding of prizes to the winners of the latest design competition at SQU, one which was for designing the banner for The Day of the Sultan Qaboos University – a contest which was won by Oman3D’s own Haitham Al Busafi (Conceptoo).

During the exhibition we introduced Oman3D websites to the visitors and were pleased to meet some of our existing members who came by our stall for a chat. We provided the stall visitors with the Oman3D monthly newsletter subscription form so that they can stay in touch with us via email.

The event also included a number of workshops and lectures by professionals and academics in the design industry, the most noteworthy of these was a lecture on branding by the Landon consultants, the international strategic branding firm  that is currently in the process of creating the new brand identity for the Sultanate of Oman.

We had great fun at SQU’s Design Forum 08 and were pleased to see this sort of events here in Oman. Lets hope we get more of them soon!

The candidate must have good English communication skills, must be able to control documents, and create and maintain reports using MS Office and MS Projects. The Ministry of Higher Education advertised today the availability of scholarship opportunities for Omanis to acquire a master’s degree in design majors such as graphic design and multimedia production. Successful applicants will be required to practice as assistant instructors at one of the colleges belonging to the Ministry of Higher Education, the period of repay employment is usually equivalent to the same number of years required to complete the degree. The conditions required to apply for this scholarship are that the applicant has the Omani nationality, that he/she acquired a B or higher overall grade in a bachelors degree for the same major he/she intends to do the master’s degree in, that he/she is not bound by any government job, and that his/her age does not exceed 25 years. The country to which successful applicants will be sent to do their master’s degree is not specified in the advertisement, but it is implied that the degree will be taught in English.
