Flex Builder Renamed As Flash Builder

Flex Builder now named Flash Builder The Flash Blog reports that Adobe will start calling all upcoming versions of the Flex Builder as Flash Builder. Flex Builder is an Eclipse based IDE for creating Flash web applications and Adobe Air applications using a the Flex framework.

The Flash Builder will still use the open source Flex framework for developing rich internet applications, the new name is simply used to clear any confusion as to the product created using this tool – it creates Flash movies in SWF format that do not require anything other than the Flash Player to run.

While this might help clarify that Flex Builder is essentially a product to make Flash content, this might create confusion between Flash Professional and Flash Builder as people might wonder what the purpose of Flash Professional is if Flash could be built using Flash Builder.

The beta release of the new version of the Flash Builder is expected to come out this summer. You can learn more about this from here.

    Two problems with this:
    1. ppl without programming ability buying flash builder and not understanding what they got.
    2. When your coding in AS3 it makes a difference which of the two products your using. And searching for answers to flex specific problems will become harder. As it is now its easier to find flex information if your also looking for info on FlashDevelop.

This is a bad move on the part of Adobe.

The new naming might lead to some confusion, but I don't think that it would go as far as someone buying the wrong program. The Flex Builder is a $200+ program, people would probably try the trial version on their machine (to at least see if it works) before they buy the application.

You should also remember that the Flex Framework would still be called the same thing, so you should still be able to search for “Flex” and find the thing you are searching for.
